Our pets can benefit from many of the same benefits as CBD has for humans. Pet owners are using CBD on their pets for anxiety, pain, and seizures.
Pets can use the exact same CBD tinctures as humans but the dosage must be adjusted significantly.
Here is a good dosing strategy we learned from veterinarian Dr. Robert J Silver:
Range of dosing: 0.05 mg per lb twice daily to 0.25 mg per lb twice daily
Tier 1: 0.05 mg per lb of bodyweight is the low end
Tier 2: 0.125 mg per lb of bodyweight is the middle ground
Tier 3: 0.25 mg per lb of bodyweight is the high end
Notice how small those dosages are.
Dr. Silver advises pet parents to start at Tier 1 twice daily and observe over a week. It may not even be necessary to go to tier 2, if desired effects are reached with Tier 1 dosing.
If necessary, go on to Tier 2 twice daily and observe for a week.
And again, if necessary to go higher, go up to Tier 3 twice daily.
To do the dosing for your pet properly, you need to figure out how many mgs of CBD are in each drop of your chosen tincture.
This is easy and just takes some simple math 🙂
Let’s take an example where I have a 30 mL bottle of CBD oil with a total of 700 mg CBD.
By looking at the serving size (.8 mL), I determined that there are 37.5 servings in the bottle. I determined this by dividing the bottle size (30 mL) by the serving size (.8 mL) and I got 37.5 servings.
Since there is a total of 700 mg CBD in the entire bottle, each serving of this product contains about 18.5 mg CBD. I got this number by dividing the total content of CBD (700 mg) by the total number of servings in the bottle (37.5)
Now that I know how much CBD is in each serving (18.5 mg), all I need to know is how many drops are in a servings. According to the bottle, there are about 24 individual drops in each serving.
That means each drop contains 0.78 mg of CBD. I got this number by dividing the CBD content of each serving (18.5) by the amount of individual drops in each serving (24).
I now know that each drop of my CBD oil contains just under 1 mg of CBD. This is necessary to know when dosing pets like cats and dogs because they require such small dosages compared to humans.
Let’s say you have a 6 lb pound Chihuahua. A drop or two per day will be enough for this tiny dog. Bigger dogs like German Shepherds will be able to take more.
For most domestic pets, a few individual drops per day will be sufficient. At least, that is where you should start. CBD tinctures are great for pets because you can dose them so precisely and they are easy to administer. Many pets will love the taste of the CBD oil – come on, I know you’ve seen your pet eat worse things!
