While many experience chapped lips occasionally, others may develop a more severe form of it referred to as cheilitis2.

While there are several lip balms out there that can help your condition; a CBD lip balm can provide the perfect answer to these lip-related disturbances.

Leaving chapped lips untreated can cause excessive inflammation, swelling, sores, and even bleeding3. In addition, several ongoing diseases can accelerate and worsen the dryness of your lips. Due to several reasons just stated, it is essential to keep your lips healthy and well hydrated.

While there are a few select lip balms formulated to sustain lip health, the majority of these just provide you with temporary relief and often fail to heal or manage the root cause of your problems.

This is where CBD comes in. This ‘non-psychoactive’ and popular cannabinoid that seems to be an added ingredient in many products because of its health benefits seems to work wonders on your lips.

CBD oil has shown intensive therapeutic effects for the skin, such as reducing inflammation and irritation4.

Numerous topical products, nowadays, such as creams and body lotions contain CBD. This ‘star ingredient’ is becoming widely reputable in lip balms too as it soothes dry, flaky lips.

But, be aware: not all lip balms are created equal. While some may provide temporary relief, others may even cause more harm than good. For instance, some lip balms just create a thin layer on the lips which quickly evaporates leaving them drier than how they were pre-application.

When choosing a natural lip balm containing CBD, it’s important to consider both quality and safety. Lips balm are applied on the lips making them easily ingested, unintentionally. To help you make an educated choice, we’ve compiled a list of the best CBD lip balms available in the market.

First, it is important to understand what is a CBD lip balm exactly and what makes it so amazing when compared to conventional balms.

What is a CBD Lip Balm?

How We Chose the Best CBD Products

Reputable CBD Brands

Always choose products produced by transparent CBD brands that have a guaranteed reputation in the industry and are dedicated to providing high-quality products. We make sure we include only these in our lists.

Natural/Non-GMO

The most reliable products are undoubtedly those that are made using all-natural, non-GMO hemp7 (produced without genetically engineered crops) grown in the U.S. Using natural ingredients limits the amount of processing required, which makes the extraction of the final product simpler. As a result, the product will be safe with minimal to no side-effects

Third-Party Lab Test Results

To ensure authenticity and reliability, always choose products that have undergone third-party lab tests and made the results available on their websites. These tests ensure that the cannabinoid levels in the product match those claimed on the product label. They guarantee that there are no heavy metals, molds, or pesticides present in the final product.

Active and Inactive Ingredients

Always look at all active (an ingredient that contains CBD) and inactive ingredients on the label to ensure you’re choosing the highest quality CBD product available. When possible, choose an all-natural product made without any artificial ingredients.

Potency

Look for products with different potencies to meet your specific needs. Certain brands offer a wider selection of potency when it comes to their products, while others offer only one or two potencies. When making our recommendations, we try to mention brands and products that offer multiple potencies.

Variety of Price

We try to include products of various prices to meet the needs of everyone’s budget. When looking at the price of a product, keep in mind that these will vary depending on the strength, serving size, volume, and any additional ingredients that may accentuate the health benefits.

Our exclusive lists try to give you all the information you need to make an informed decision that suits your specific desires and needs. We want to bring you a variety to choose the best CBD lip balm for your individual needs.

Extraction Method

Try choosing products that are made using clean and safe extraction methods8. There are three common extraction methods when it comes to CBD extraction:

Olive Oil Method of Extraction

The olive oil method of extraction was the first method utilized for extracting CBD oil from hemp. It is a clean and cost-effective method that involves heating the raw plant material to a temperature that activates the plant. However, the main issue with this method is that the olive oil, activated with CBD, must then be strictly kept in a dark and cool place in order to keep it fresh9.

Solvent Extraction

Solvent extraction uses a solvent like the butane, propane, ethanol, isopropyl, or alcohol to extract the CBD from hemp. It is the cheapest and quickest method but can also be dangerous.

CO2 Method

Currently, the most common method of extracting CBD is the CO2 method, which is also the most expensive due to the cost of its necessary equipment. However, it provides a potent, safe, and chlorophyll-free product. This method allows a brand to create the best CBD lip balm for you.

How Much CBD Lip Balm Should I Use?

Determining how much CBD product to use and how often to apply your CBD lip balm will vary for each individual. It’s recommended to start using a smaller amount and gradually increasing the amount you apply, if you still did not get the results needed.

Generally, you want to aim for a minimal effective use. Be careful not to use too little as the CBD lip balm remains ineffective.

The amount of CBD in a product, known as the potency, makes a huge difference in determining whether it will be effective for you or not. While most CBD lip balms contain 15 to 25 mg of CBD per stick, a more potent product can contain 50 mg or more like the Hemp Bombs lip balm.

Always consult with your doctor should you have any concerns about using a CBD product. They will address your concerns and answer your questions.

CBD Lip Balm Effects

Since lips are a sensitive area of the body, you should always consider applying lip balms containing pure and natural compounds. Make sure to read the label for all active and inactive ingredients and keep in mind any allergies you may have to ensure you’re not going to trigger an unwanted reaction to any ingredients used in the product.

When using a CBD lip balm, remember that hemp is a bio-accumulator, meaning that it absorbs whatever is present in the soil where it is grown. This can include harmful agents, such as toxins and metallic compounds, which when applied onto the skin can have adverse effects. So when choosing a product, always look for Certificates of Analysis (COA), we’ve supplied links to all the products COA’s.

In case of rashes or other skin reactions, immediately discontinue usage. You can try using a small amount daily, and if it is well-tolerated, you can try to increase the amount allowing your body to adjust gradually.

How Long Does CBD Lip Balm Effects Last?

A CBD lip balm creates a protective layer on the lips that seals in moisture and protects them from external exposures. Practically, you should use a moisturizing CBD lip balm daily to avoid dry, chapped lips. The application depends on how many times a day you feel the need to re-moisturize and soften your lips.

Can CBD Lip Balm be Used for Cold Sores?

CBD lip balms minimize itching, inflammation, redness, and soreness. They can also be effective in reducing the discomfort from cold sores. Every person experiences a different reaction with CBD according to the condition they are dealing with. If you are using a CBD lip balm when you have a cold sore, be careful and try to test applying it to your sore.

Upon application, you need to observe: if you notice that the lip balm is helping the healing process of your cold sore, then try to use a little more of it. If your sore worsens or doesn’t get any better, discontinue using the CBD lip balm immediately and consult your doctor. It is always advisable to consult with your doctor before using a CBD lip balm.

CBD Legality

However, always check your state’s laws and the laws adopted by the states or countries you are traveling to.

CBD Safety and Side Effects

Discover what CBD Side Effects You May Feel Here

However, always read product labels carefully to ensure that you aren’t allergic or sensitive to any of the other active or inactive ingredients.

Final Thoughts

If your lips consistently remain dry and damaged, a CBD lip balm is surely a great option to explore. It has anti-inflammatory and soothing properties, combined with other natural healing ingredients. Altogether, they make it the perfect tool for immediate relief.

While CBD lip balms may add a slight cost to your lip balm purchase, the added benefit that CBD provides your lips with could potentially be a game-changer especially during colder months.

Remember to always choose a CBD lip balm that features high-quality, and lab-tested hemp. Double-check the ingredients to ensure you aren’t allergic to any of them.
